Performing Environments

This morning Adam Russell gave a 15 minute intro to the architectural origins of the UTS Great Hall and Balcony Room design. 120 students attended the tour through both spaces. Over the next 45 minutes of the tour the Australia Piano Quartet (UTS Ensemble in Residence) played a series of musical pieces on un-amplified classical instruments. The music was deliberately selected to explore and exemplify the acoustic qualities of each space.

The students are studying a Lighting Acoustics and Advanced Environments subject taught by Leena Thomas. The subject is run in cross disciplinary collaboration working in conjunction with the Australia Piano Quartet, UTS Ensemble in Residence.

It was wonderful hearing how professional musicians engaged with and interpreted the spaces.
